“Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’aan in order that you may understand.” [Surah Yusuf: 2]
This is just one of the places where Allaah mentions that the Qur’aan was revealed in the Arabic Language.
Arabic is the language in which the Qur’aan was revealed and the tongue of our beloved and noble Prophet Muhammad (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). This in itself should be enough to ignite in us a strong desire to understand this beautiful language. By doing so, we would be able to better understand the words of our Lord, the statements of His Messenger (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) in addition to benefitting much more from the works of our ‘ulamah (scholars) past and present.
Our Salaf placed much emphasis on learning the Arabic language; some of their statements in this regard include:
Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said:
“The Salaf would admonish their children for making Arabic grammatical mistakes.  Due to this, we are ordered, whether it be an obligation or a recommendation, to preserve the Arabic (grammatical) laws, and to correct the tongues that have deviated from the correct speech.  By doing so, we preserve the methodology of understanding the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.  We also preserve the following of the Arab in their manner of (correct) speech.  If people were left with their grammatical mistakes, this would be considered a great deficiency and despicable mistake.”   [Majmoo' Al Fatawa 32/252]
Ubay ibn Ka'b (radhiyAllaahu ‘anhu) said,
"Learn Arabic just as you learn to memorize the Qur'aan." [Ibn Abî Shaybah, Al-Musannaf Vol.7 p150.]
‘Abdullaah Ibn Zayd Al-Numayree reports that Al-Hasan Al-Basree (rahimahullaah) said:
They (the heretics) were destroyed by their inability in Arabic (al-‘ujmah). [Al-Bukhârî, Al-Târîkh Al-Kabîr Vol.5 p99.]
These are just a few of the statements of the Salaf regarding the high station of the Arabic Language in IslaamShaykh Ahmad Shamlaan (hafidhahullaah) will give us an overview of the Arabic Language as well as enlighten us concerning its virtues and the obligation upon theMuslims to learn it.
We ask Allaah to guide us to all that is correct and beloved to Him and make it easy for us to learn and understand Arabic – the Language of the Qur’aan.
